Mindy Leiter Kepfield has been named managing editor of the McPherson Sentinel.

Steve Lundblade, general manager of the McPherson Sentinel and the Newton Kansan for GateHouse media, named Kepfield to the new position effective Monday.

Kepfield, 45, replaces Cheyenne Derksen Schroeder, 24, who is leaving to take a position as assistant managing editor for the Hutchinson News. Schroeder joined the Sentinel as a reporter in June 2015 after graduating Tabor College and has served as its managing editor since July 2017.

“McPherson is a vibrant, growing community and everyone has been so lovely and welcoming,” Kepfield said. “Cheyenne will be a very tough act to follow, but I am excited to begin working with a great staff at a wonderful paper.”

Kepfield earned a degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She served on the copy desk of the Hutchinson News as a page designer for nearly 18 years. She and her husband, Sam, live in Hutchinson with their two daughters Valerie, 16, and Sabrina, 13.
