KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially released the bracket for the 2018 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship slated for May 15-19 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.
McPherson College (14-3) received the No. 22 seed in the event and will face 11th-seeded University of Northwestern Ohio (13-5) in a first-round match at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15. The winner of that match will face sixth-seeded Cumberland University (Tenn.) in the second round at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 16.
The Bulldogs advanced to the NAIA Championship with a 5-4 win over rival Bethany College in the championship match of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Tournament. The Racers - out of Lima, Ohio - qualified by edging Lawrence Technological University, 5-4, in the final of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament.
McPherson is making its fourth consecutive trip to nationals.
The 24-team field consists of 12 automatic berths, 11 at-large selections, and the host berth to Mobile (Ala.). Automatic qualification is given to conference and unaffiliated grouping tournament champions.
At-large teams were determined by the NAIA Tennis National Selection Committee (NSC). The NSC consists of one representative from each geographic area, a representative from the National Administrative Council (NAC), the president of the Tennis Coaches Association and two at-large members. The committee evaluated teams throughout the year on various criteria.
