INMAN—It was a good way to end the up and down season for the Canton-Galva High School softball team as they took both ends of a doubleheader on the road at Inman on Tuesday, winning game one 14-7 and then following up with a commanding 15-2 victory in game two, the final game of the season for both teams.
In game one, Inman scored a single run in the bottom of the second, which Canton/Galva responded to with a three-run third. While the Lady Teutons added one in the third and four in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead, the Lady Eagles turned on the offense in innings five and six by pouring across 11 runs to gain the 14-7 victory.
Ashton Brewer continued her strong season on the mound for the Lady Eagles by throwing a complete game while giving up just six hits, walking nine and striking out five. Kennedy Shober also threw a complete game for the Lady Teutons and struck out four.
On the offensive side, Canton-Galva pounded out 18 hits and earned nine walks, with Taylor Everett, Jayci Mastre and Alexa Burch leading the way with three hits each. Mastre also had credit for three runs batted in while hitting a double. Jenni Fitzpatrick and Carissa Klatt each had doubles as well, while Alexa Burch hit a triple and Everett cleared the fences with a home run. The Lady Eagles also kept busy when on base, stealing a base nine times as Everett, Alexa Koehn and Emily Peterson each had two.
Canton-Galva took command early in the second game, pouring across six runs in the second to gain an early 7-0 advantage before Inman knocked across their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third. The Lady Eagles added eight insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to close out the season with a 15-2 win.
Once again Ashton Brewer took the mound for the Lady Eagles and went the distance, giving up just six hits and two walks while scoring six strikeouts. Hannah Lucas made the start in game two for the Lady Teutons.
The Lady Eagles pounded out 20 hits in the nightcap, with Jayci Mastre leading the way with four, while Taylor Everett, Taryn Nordstrom, Alexa Burch and Jenni Fitzpatrick each had three. Fitzpatrick pounded out two doubles, while Mastre and Nordstrom each had one. On the base paths Canton-Galva swiped a base 14 times, with Jillian Ross-Mason getting four and Everett swiping three.
With the two victories the Lady Eagles closed out the regular season with a 7-10-1 record, while the Lady Teutons finish with a 5-15 mark.
Both teams will join Moundridge, Cottonwood Falls-Chase County, Hillsboro and Marion in the Class 2-1A Softball Regionals on Monday and Tuesday at Canton-Galva High School.
