It was Senior Night for the McPherson High School soccer team as the Lady Pups ended their regular season with a bang after a 9-1 victory over Salina Central High School at home. The Lady Pups conclude their season with the record 14-1-1 on the year and outscoring their opponents 104-7.
"I'm real proud of the seniors especially on senior night," head coach Chris Adrian said after the game. "There were a lot of great moments in the game. Our seniors have mean a lot to the program in the last four years."
The Lady Pups didn't waste any time putting points on the board early in the first half. McPherson's scoring leader Aislinn Hughes dominated in the first half by scoring all three goals.
It did not stop there as the Lady Pups scored six more goals in the second half. Kelsey Wilson led the second half with two goals of her own. Kenzie Godwin, Claire Hedlund, Jessie Kynaston and Lauren Hein also helped out putting points on the board over the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Pups would record 20 shots on goal overall.
"I think we played well as a team and I think it was a nice way to end this season," Wilson said. "Everyone stayed positive even though we had a little bit of a rough patch but we all were positive and encouraged the entire game."
With their season coming to an end, the Lady Pups now can focus on the postseason with a major goal in mind. Throughout four years, McPherson has accomplished four league titles, three regional champions and runner-up finishes at state. With regionals coming up next Tuesday, the Lady Pups are on a mission to win it all for the first time. For McPherson, who holds the No.1 seed and home field advantage, they're now one step closer to achieving that goal.
"Ever since our freshman year, it has definitely been our goal," Hughes said. "Getting second is awesome and all especially since it's history for women's soccer, but we really want that and it has always been in the back in our minds."
Still Undefeated: The McPherson junior varsity soccer team has finished their season after defeating Salina Central 7-0. The Lady Pups finished the year undefeated, having not lost in the past 22 games and only giving up two goals in that span. Anna Nason led the Lady Pups with three goals and one assist.
