At 8:22 p.m. Thursday, McPherson Police Department officers tried to stop a silver Chevrolet Impala on West First Street near Hickory Street, according to a press release. Officers recognized the driver of the car, 29-year-old Ira D. Autrey, as having warrants for his arrest.
Autrey refused to stop for the officers and drove east on First Street at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic and narrowly avoiding collisions with other motorists.
Autrey's car then hit a light pole and sign at the intersection of First and Eby streets.
Exiting the car and running away from officers, Autrey jumped several fences and ran through several residential properties before being caught and arrested by officers.
After being transported to McPherson Hospital for minor health concerns, Autrey was taken to the McPherson County Jail.
"No one else was injured," said Executive Sgt. and Public Information Officer Mark Brinck.
Autrey had warrants out of Saline County, one for for Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana — with a $65,000 bond — and one for Failure to Appear. He also had two Failure to Appear warrants out of McPherson County.
A search of the Impala Autrey was driving yielded a loaded semi-automatic handgun, loaded handgun magazines and several containers and packages of marijuana.
For his actions on Thursday, Autrey was charged with Attempt to Flee or Elude Law Enforcement Officer by Engaging in Reckless Driving, Driving While Suspended, Reckless Driving, Criminal Possession of a Weapon (Firearm) by Felon, Possession of Marijuana and Possession with Intent to Distribute.
A court date has not yet been set for Autrey.
