Ignoring a timeworn superstition might score you a cash payout tonight if you attend McPherson’s 19th Annual Shop the Night Away.

In addition to the sweet deals and great times, offered by McPherson’s Main Street shop keepers, those brave enough to venture forth from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday the 13th will have a chance to grab as much as they can of $1,000 from a cash vault.

The money giveaway is sponsored by Emprise Bank, Sunflower Bank, Home State Bank, First Bank Kansas and People’s Bank and Trust. Anyone interested in trying their luck can register tonight from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The drawing will be at 8:45 p.m. on the Main Street Plaza.

Five people will then have 30 seconds to grab as many greenbacks as they can from the $1,000.

All participating stores are also offering a chance to win a $500 shopping spree, gift cards and tickets to World’s of Fun/Oceans of Fun in Kansas City. Organizers are eager for McPherson residents to enjoy a night of great deals, food, face painting and a dunk tank as they try their luck.

“Since it (Shop the Night Away) takes place on this day, we are saying it could be your lucky day because there are multiple prizes to win and shopping bargains at all the stores,” Ann Engel, executive director of McPherson Main Street said.

The event will offer a chance for McPherson Main Street businesses to participate in a night of community fun and promote what they have to offer.

“As a group, our locally owned and operated businesses are among the largest employers, yet they are often run primarily by the owners themselves who work many hours each week.

As small businesses, they are usually the first to be asked for donations of free prizes, coupons and money and often buy ads in programs, sponsor events and generally anything to help the community. We want them to know how appreciated they are and urge the community to support them in return,” she said.

Stores will offer their wares on Main Street’s sidewalks.

“It’s a popular event and an opportunity for the stores to do a big summer sidewalk sale,” she said.

The annual event helps businesses with sales tax-revenue for the city.

“This particular event is a sales promotion so it affects each businesses income, which helps them retain their employees, their businesses and more,” Engel said.

Along with cash prizes, gifts and more, participants may also enjoy games at participating stores. These include: card games, raffles and chalk art at Hopp’s Sound and Electric; Wheel of Fortune at Simply Good Overstocks; Lucky Plinko at The Bookshelf; Surprise at the Clayworks; Draw for Discount at The Cooks Nook; Spin to Win at the Rusty Tin Boutique; Snake Eyes at Dr. Esther V. Rettig; and Spin the Wheel at MTC.
