Raffle prizes, food, music and more are scheduled during Brotherhood of Mann’s annual fundraiser, which will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Oct. 13 at the American Legion, 401 N. Main St. in McPherson.

Volunteer Hollie Melroy said Brotherhood of Mann was started in 2014 when a friend riding his motorcycle was hit by an inattentive driver.

“When our friend was hurt, we all just pulled together and helped,” Melroy said. “We did the first fundraiser to help raise money for his family to be able to stay with him while he was in Wichita until he came out of the coma.”

While Melroy’s friend was able to heal, the realization that not every crash victim is so lucky was motivating.

“We couldn’t not help the next person,” Melroy said.

Now, Brotherhood of Mann is a nonprofit organization that aids motorcycle riders in Kansas who are hit by other drivers with either a one-time donation of $500 or by helping their family organize a fundraiser in their area.

“It could be your friend, your family member. You just don’t know who it’s going to effect,” Melroy said. “There are too many accidents every day.”

At this year’s fundraiser, a meal of homemade chicken and noodles or beef and noodles served with mashed potatoes and a roll will be served up for a freewill donation from 5 to 7 p.m.

A bake sale will also start at 5 p.m., with items including party mix, oyster crackers, peppernuts, people chow, peanut butter balls, Oreo truffles, peanut butter monkey bread, Nutella monkey bread, sugar-free pumpkin pie, sugar-free strawberry/banana pie, monster cookies, Amish friendship bread, banana strawberry bread, toffee, funky Fritos, chocolate popcorn and gluten-free pumpkin muffins available for purchase.

Brotherhood of Mann T-shirts and hoodies will also be sold at the fundraiser.

Raffle tickets, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing will also be part of the event.

There is no cover charge, and children are welcome to attend the fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m.

“It’s very upbeat. We’re a very upbeat group,” Melroy said. “We just are wanting to have fun.”

Auction items including a handmade quilt, homemade decor and kids’ items will also be offered up for bid.

The Bad Dawgs will play from 7 to 11 p.m.

Volunteer designated drivers will be available to provide rides home for anyone in McPherson who chooses to have a few drinks,

“We don’t want you to come to a fundraiser and get in trouble on your way home,” Melroy said.

All proceeds from Brotherhood of Mann’s fundraiser will go motorcycle crash victims.
