Health and safety were the hot topics of the day for McPherson CertainTeed employees Thursday.
About 150 employees from the company’s siding and pipe products plants joined thousands of other CertainTeed and Saint-Gobain — CertainTeed’s parent company — employees at 330 different manufacturing facilities in 64 different countries for an international celebration of health, safety and the environment.
“Health, safety and the protection of the environment are an integral part of our core values,” said Kelly Young, Plant Manager of CertainTeed Siding Products facility. “This day is a great opportunity for us to come together as part of the Saint-Gobain family and, in our own local community, to reaffirm our collective commitment to safeguarding our environment, our colleagues and ourselves.”
The day-long emphasis on health and safety included workshops and videos in the morning following by lunch and an afternoon of demonstrations and informational booths.
CertainTeed Molded Projects HR/EHS Manager Scott Johnson said the company holds the safety day every two years to help remind and educate employees on the importance of health and safety not only in the worlkplace but at home.
The afternoon workshops included fire extinguisher training, a fork lift rodeo, information on first aid, wellness education and demonstrations on water and electrical conservation.
The booths were made possible by McPherson Fire Department personnel, McPherson County 4-H Extension agents and Cintas.
Employees were also given the opportunity to get a flu shot.
Young said employees enjoy the opportunity to learn more about workplace safety and the environment with the weather making it a great day to get out.
A major focus of this year’s event was environmental protection said Saint-Gobain President and CEO Gilles Colas. As a company, Saint-Gobain has committed to reducing its energy use by 25 percent over the next decade and has alraedy reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 70,000 tons.
All employees were also again asked to take the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Pledge, promising to reduce the impact their household has on the environment.
