American Maplan of McPherson received an award from the Kansas Department of Labor’s (KDOL) safety awards program, KSafe, Wednesday for 1 million work hours without a lost time injury.
“Our last accident was in 2001. It shows the empressive work ethic from our employees,” Kurt Waldhauer, president and CEO of American Maplan, said.
Governor Mark Parkinson visited Maplan Wednesday to congratulate the company and its employees on its achievement.
“This is a major accomplishment, particularly when you have an over eight-year string. It’s remarkable,” Parkinson said. “I’ve noticed it takes everyone to make this happen.”
The guidelines to recieve a KSafe award include: a record of the number lost-time accidents, no uncorrected serious OSHA citations within the last 12 months, the company must be in good standing with Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) and be current on all tax rolls, a formal safety program must be in place and a formal employee safety training program must be in place.
“The companies that achieve this tend to excel in other areas of business,” Parkinson said. “It’s great for the company, it saves the company money and it’s overall a great thing.”
Herb Holmberg, safety consultant for KDOL, said less than 100 companies in Kansas have recieved the KSafe award.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for everyone,” Holmberg said.
The goal of the KSafe award is to encourage Kansas employers to maintain safe work environments in an effort to reduce the number on work-site injuries and accidents.
Parkinson said when an employee is hurt, they have the opportunity to file workman’s comp. but it’s “unfortanate because they are never the same” and it doesn’t make up for the work they lost.
Waldhauer presented Parkinson with the first 1 million hour shirt, which was given to Maplan employees Wednesday.
American Maplan will also receive a Special Recognition Award at the Annual Kansas Safety and Health Conference in October.
