Marci Penner, renowned author of the “8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook,” will present a program about the book at The Cedars Wellness & Conference Center at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 8.
The initial program will be followed by an opportunity to purchase the $30 book and get the author’s signature. The Conference Center is at 1021 Cedars Drive in McPherson.
The presentation will include many interesting behind-the-scenes stories about how the book was put together. The “8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook” was created with a coffee-table book format and is a compilation of 216 entries from throughout the state. From 2007 through 2010, more than 100,000 people voted on the top eight entries out of 24 finalists in each category. The categories that are covered revolve around the art, architecture, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history and people of Kansas.
Those finalists are then presented using more than 800 photographs by Harland Schuster, a farmer and stockman from Morrill.
Along with those pictures is information about location, contacts, and hours which turn the book from a pictorial into a true travel guide.
The “8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook” was undertaken by the Kansas Sampler Foundation, where Penner serves as foundation director, and was printed by Mennonite Press in Newton. The mission of the foundation is to preserve and sustain rural culture.
“We made choices about making the book an all-Kansas book. Its purpose is to educate Kansans and the world about what there is to see and do in Kansas, as well as to encourage travel to these places and all points in between,” Penner said.
