C-G’s Dawes retiring
Vonnie Dawes, Canton-Galva Elementary School teacher, will be honored at a retirement reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the school library. The public is invited.
Dawes began her career in Pender, Neb., where she taught first grade for six years. In 1983, the Dawes family moved to Kansas; she was hired as a kindergarten teacher for Canton. She also taught Title 1 Reading and Math. For the past 12 years, she has taught 4th grade at C-GES.
Bethany professor retiring
LINDSBORG- Professor of Mathematics John Murphy, who has taught at Bethany since 1968, has decided to retire at the end of this academic year.
Bethany College President Edward F. Leonard III thanked Professor Murphy during a campus reception on May 13. During the gathering, he said, "Dr. Murphy will be missed in the classroom and in the Bethany community. His unique humor and teaching abilities have been appreciated by all on campus for 40 years."
Murphy’s presence in the lives of Bethany students has been constant for more than four decades. He has been awarded the Bethany College Mortvedt Award for Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership and served as the mathematics and physics department chair. Murphy coached tennis for seven years and is a founding member of the Central Kansas Conservancy. He is also this year’s recipient of the Donna Meredith Humphreys Award for Teaching.
Bethany is currently searching for a full-time professor this semester.
Murphy earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Kansas State University and his Master of Arts from Washington University, where he was a graduate assistant. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois. Previously, Murphy taught at Kansas State University and Lenoir-Rhyne College. He is professionally affiliated with the Kansas Branch of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Mathematical Associate of America and Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.

LINDSBORG- Director of Health Services Judy Murphy will retire at the end of this month.
Bethany College President Edward F. Leonard III thanked Murphy during a campus reception on May 13. During the gathering, he said, "Judy has helped us all at one point or another. She is patient, caring and kind. She will truly be missed at Bethany.”
Murphy’s dedication to serving students was recognized when she became the first recipient of the Service to Students Award, now called the Greg and Beth Pierce Award, in 2001. Known on campus as “Nurse Judy,” her willingness to help heal any ailment has led her to be adored by all.
When Murphy moved to Lindsborg, she began working as a nurse in Lindsborg’s hospital before accepting a position with student health services at Bethany in 1972. She then became the director of health services in 1975.
Bethany is currently exploring options for student health services.
