McPherson County residents will again have HOME grants at their disposal in 2012.
At its Tuesday meeting, the McPherson County Commission voted to sign an agreement with the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation. The document outlines the amounts to be contributed by both parties to the project, with the state agency committing $215,700 in federal money and the county $26,432 from its own coffers. Chairman Ron Loomis was absent and did not vote on the measure.
The commission initially asked the housing group for $400,000, but less money was available for disbursement to Kansas cities and counties than in 2011. Instead of denying some groups funds, the state cut the amounts awarded to each.
The agreement also includes a comprehensive budget form that lists not only federal money distributed from the state, but also county contributions and other state programs focused on home rehabilitation. Including such funds, like those provided through the Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program, a total of $292,500 is invested in rehabilitation initiatives.
HOME grants are available to rural or city homeowners who meet certain income guidelines and other restrictions to help increase the value of their homes. Each home accepted into the program receives about $25,000 in improvements to repair things like siding, foundations and siding.
In 2012, the funds are expected to help of 10 McPherson County homeowners.
In other news:
• Dr. Gretchen Esping was appointed to the McPherson County Mental Health Advisory Board. Esping is institutional research officer and director of the dual credit program at Central Christian College. She is on the McPherson Board of Directors of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
• The commission was notified McPherson County tax statements were mailed to residents.
