Governor Mark Parkinson has directed flags at all state buildings and grounds to be lowered to half-staff starting today in memory of State Representative James (Jim) Morrison from Colby.  Flags will be flown at half-staff until interment.  As soon as the Governor’s Office is made aware of funeral arrangements, facilities will be notified when to resume flying flags at full-staff.

“Today as we give thanks for our many blessings, we also give thanks for generous public servants like Jim Morrison,” said Parkinson.  “Jim was an energetic and kind man who was very much appreciated by his colleagues and his constituents. Our hearts go out to his family on his passing.”

Rep. Morrison attended Colby public schools, graduating from high school in 1960.  He attended the University of Kansas from 1960 to 1964, majoring in Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology and went on to the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1967.

Rep. Morrison entered the Kansas Legislature as representative of the 121st District in 1992 and he continued his optometric practice on weekends, often seeing as many patients as he had previously done during weekdays. Rep. Morrison was re-elected earlier this month to his 10th term.

Rep. Morrison, 68, was undergoing treatment for a heart condition when he passed away at a Denver hospital Wednesday evening. He is survived by his grade school friend, high school sweetheart and wife, Karen, as well as four grown children and many grandchildren.

The Governor has the authority to direct flags at half-staff in honor of the death of state officials as stated by Executive Order 10-12.
