Ann Zerger, assistant professor of art at McPherson College, is well-known throughout Kansas for her unique sculpture. Now one of her sculptures will be taking the international stage as a part of the invitation-only “A Perfect Day” exhibition in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
“This is my first experience of having my artwork shown in an overseas international venue and a venue that includes significant artists,” Zerger said. “It is also exciting for me to be a part of an exhibition that is focusing on issues and ideas that are on the cutting edge of the contemporary art world. Creating this sculpture was a wonderful adventure and growth for me as an artist.”
“A Perfect Day” is showing today through Feb. 24 in Amsterdam at the Westergasfabriek, a former gas factory turned cultural center. The venue will display the work of more than 50 international artists, including writer Dave Eggers, sculptor Jonathan Borofsky and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. The exhibition features work that combines images with text in humorous and profound ways.
Zerger’s contribution, titled “Farewell,” is a collaborative family effort. Zerger created six elongated, abstract figures; her nephew, Jesse Nathan, wrote poetry relating to the figures; and Zerger’s husband, Chip Parker, integrated the words and sculpture into a single piece with the poetry applied to the sculptures — top to bottom —in vibrant red letters.
“I have never used words within my work before,” Zerger said. “It was a fun and an intriguing problem to integrate and merge sculpture and poetry into one entity.”
Wayne Conyers, professor of art, said it was no surprise Zerger’s art has reached an international audience, and this accomplishment proved her knowledge and sensitivity to contemporary art.
“She has the wonderful ability to fuse concepts, insightful content, expressive elements, and magnificent technical skills,” Conyers said. “This is a significant step in Ann’s personal development as an artist, and also as a professor of art who excels at both teaching and creating art at a high level.”
