SALINA - Kansas First District Congressional Candidate and former Salina Mayor Monte Shadwick released the following statement responding to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:
“Once again the President demonstrated how little his administration understands about the lives and livelihoods of Kansans. I’m at the Garden City Farm Show and continue to hear today from concerned citizens who are worried about the impacts of an ever-growing government and its intrusion into their daily lives. Instead of hearing these voices, the President has devised plans that will expand the government even further, irresponsibly spend more of your tax dollars, and increase the public debt.
The President says that politics as usual is bad for the country yet in the next breath announces that his solution is to send more money to Washington D.C. and give more control to the government. It is time that we stand up and say “Enough is enough.” The administration insists on attempting to force thru their big-government solutions to health care, job creation and federal spending. This cannot be allowed to happen - the decision making culture in Washington D.C. must change.
As an entrepreneur and small business owner I understand that the government should not be the primary driver of job creation. Businesses will create jobs and hire more people when they have confidence in the economy. Unfortunately the current trend of injecting money into the economy by passing it through Washington D.C. does not create this confidence. We need an environment where businesses succeed or fail based upon their merits, not the number of lobbying dollars they spend on Capitol Hill.
I am encouraged daily by the common sense, passion and support of the people of Kansas. We must continue to speak out and ensure that our voices are heard by the Administration and in the halls of Congress. I will be a strong voice for Kansas values and work tirelessly to create an environment where our state’s individuals, businesses and communities can grow and prosper.”
