McPherson County, through the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), is beginning the process of developing a County Hazard Mitigation Plan and invites the public to attend the “Kick-Off” meeting.
Hazard mitigation plans identify reasonable strategies to reduce the potential loss of life, human suffering, and loss of property from man made or natural disasters, such as floods, fires, snow and ice storms, tornados, power outages and public health emergencies.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires states and local governments to have approved hazard mitigation plans in order to qualify for certain types of community disaster assistance.
Mitigation is defined as “Acting before a disaster strikes to prevent permanently the occurrence of the disaster or to reduce the effects of the disaster when it occurs.” It can also be used after a disaster to reduce the risk of a repeat disaster.
The “Kick-Off” meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the McPherson Community Building, 122 East Marlin.
