About 30 students from McPherson College volunteered their time and muscles last Saturday to help Save ’N’ Share with its move to a new building. Groups came in shifts to remove and clean up bricks and other unneeded items in the basement of their new location, 209 S. Main St.
“They were just absolutely fabulous,” said volunteer Wendy Paul. “I couldn't believe how good of workers they were. They did whatever we asked and were all very willing to work.”
The process of moving out of the old building on South Maple is expected to begin in late November or early December. Volunteers expect to be up and running in the new location by early January.
Paul said this will provide them with better lighting, more space and allow them to have different items available to help others.
Save ’N’ Share always welcomes volunteers, which provided the perfect opportunity for McPherson College, whose mission is “to develop whole persons through scholarship, participation and service.”
“When we do these kind of activities, we're living out this mission statement,” said Tom Hurst, director of service programs. “The college community is part of the McPherson community. We're teaching students that being involved with the community is something we ought to be doing.”
The students who volunteered were part of the Serve 2 Succeed program sponsored by Kansas Campus Compact. This qualified for one of six service projects they are required to do during the year.
