PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - On April 3, Blake William Wilson, 2nd Class Naval Petty Officer, was awarded the Silver Dolphin Submarine Warfare Insignia.
Wilson is the son of Troy and Tami Wilson of McPherson, grandson of Bill Wilson and the late Marilyn Wilson, also of McPherson, and a 2005 McPherson High School graduate.
He is currently serving as a Nuclear Technician and Mechanist Mate assigned to the USS La Jolla, a Los Angeles-class nuclear powered attack submarine stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Wilson was awarded the Silver Dolphin after demonstrating an extensive level of knowledge across a broad spectrum of the ship’s systems and operating and casualty procedures.
Only a select few Naval personnel have met the standards to receive the award.
Wilson completed his basic training in Chicago in 2005 and attended Nuclear “A’ school and Naval Nuclear Power School at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) in Charleston, S.C. Due to its depth and fast pace, it is regarded as one of the most difficult programs in the country.
Wilson continued his education with six additional months of hands-on experience and training at a Nuclear Power Training Unit in Ballston Spa, N.Y., operating nuclear reactors before serving with the fleet.
Wilson also recently returned from a six-month Westpac (Western Pacific) deployment, stopping at ports in Sasebo, Okinawa and Yokosuka in Japan; South Korea; Singapore; and Guam.
Wilson has another two-and-a-half years in Hawaii. He  and other sailors are currently doing maintenance on the submarine. Once he completes his deployment, Wilson plans to attend K-State and earn an engineering degree in the nuclear field.
