The Visual Arts Alliance of McPherson will feature works in mixed media by three Kansas artists during the months of May and June at the VAAM Gallery on South Main Street.
Andrea Fuhrman, from Abilene, works with pigment, tiny scissors, needle and thread , she cuts, sutures and paints wordless correspondence that document a world partly inhabited and partly remembered. She recycles and alters all types of material in her collage images that often are as small as a postcard. She creates a surreal universe where nothing makes sense but everything convinces us of its own internal logic.
Mira Mickler Moss, from Salina, grows gourds and then gives them a life of their own by combining all sorts of materials in their decoration. She may have the gourd supported on metal legs, or carved with lacy design, or embellished with a clay compound painted to appear as tiny pebbles. She is directed by an intuition or inspiration that manifests in what seems appropriate for the shape of the gourd.
Jerry Exline, a Salina artist, chooses paper pulp to execute his paintings. The process is done with shredded and soaked colored paper and blended to a pulp. Each variant color of the pulp is carefully poured to his design specifications on a screen and when set turned over to reveal the final product. Other materials can be included with the pulp to give a new focus to his piece. After the setting process the pulp can not be reworked. The pulp design is then sprayed with a fixative and mounted on mat board and framed.
The reception for the artists will be held May 9 in the VAAM Gallery, 223 S. Main as part of VAAM’s Sampler, an evening with the arts which includes the theatre performance of Love Letters, acted by Dr Rick Tyler and Karlene Tyler. The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Opera House Ballroom, followed by a reception for the artists and actors held in the VAAM Gallery. Everyone can enjoy and evening of theatre, art, live music and chocolate deserts.
