McPherson College President Michael Schneider played Oprah, handing out a gift card to The Well to all students in attendance at Friday’s convocation ceremonies.
The gift cards are intended to not only quench student’s thirst but also get them out and about in an effort to help inspire ideas and creativity.
During Friday’s ceremony, Schneider announced the start of the Horizon Fund, a new initiative at the college, the awarding of micro-grants to students who have ideas or a project they want to see through to reality.
The grants, which will range from $100 to $500, will be awarded to students who submit ideas for a new business or project. The proposals can be at the idea stage or can be ready for implementation. The Horizon committee will be responsible for awarding the grants. Any McPherson College student is eligible to apply.
“This is an opportunity for you to take some resources and see if your idea works,” Schnedier said.
In addition to networking and brainstorming in the classroom and dorm room, Schnedier said the gift cards will give students an opportunity to get out and find inspiration in new places.
“You are in the sweet spot of your life,” Schneider said adding that as college students, many of them still possessed the characteristics that are important for becoming an entrepreneur.
The Horizon Fund is a part of the college’s new larger push to “lift up the liberal arts” and provide students with opportunities to become entrepreneurs, try new things and do things they dreamed of as a child.
Schneider told students Friday to think back to when they were kids and had dreams and nothing to hold them back. Remember their dreams and aspirations and rekindle that enthusiasm.
“What if I told you you could get some of that back,” Schneider said. “At McPherson College, you have that opportunity.”
