Every year, it seems the Christmas holiday overshadows the celebration of the true reason for the season. Presents take precedent over Bible stories and Christmas Eve church services are spent planning and fretting over the Christmas dinner.
Wayne Conyers and others on Trinity Lutheran Church’s stewardship committee knew that the only way to really remove Christ from the retail Christmas holiday was to take away the trees, stockings and snowflakes.
This Sunday, July 18, the church will be holding a Spirit of Christmas in July church service that will include all of the aspects of a Christmas service without the stress of the Christmas holiday.
“No purchasing presents, no decorating houses, no worrying about feeding relatives, no decision about which concerts and parties to attend,” Conyers said. “This is an opportunity to praise God and the gift of his some without distraction.”
Members of the community- churched and non-churched- are invited and welcome to attend Sunday’s service. Prior to the service, the church choir will lead carols and Christmas music will be included throughout the service.
Following the service, the church will host a fellowship time. People are asked to bring snacks- which can but don’t have to be Christmas oriented- and stay for treats and coffee.
The service, Conyers said, is intended to remind people of the real reason for the season and that that message should be remembered throughout the year, not just in December.
