The roads will be packed this weekend as travelers hit the roads to enjoy the unofficial end of summer.
According to travel projections released by AAA, about 34.4 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend. That represents a nearly 10 percent increase when compared to 2009 figures.
Of those traveling, 31 million are expected to drive while an additional 4.6 percent will hit the airports. Both figures represent noticable increases over last year.
AAA expects national gas prices to average between $2.65 and $2.75 over the holiday weekend, barring any major tropical storm. Kansas’ current weekly gas price average is $2.61.
Airfare and hotel rates for the holiday weekend are both expected to rise. Hotel rates, on average, increased 9 percent from last year with the lowest round-trip airfare averaging $179. Hotel rates are up about 6 percent to an average of $139 per night compared o $132 per night last year.
Locally, popular destinations, according to AAA forecasters, for area travelers include family trips to New Mexico, Texas, Yellowstone National Park, Florida and Disney.
