The latest Survey USA poll released Wednesday showed a leader board shuffle among Republicans vying for Jerry Moran’s 1st district seat. Salina Republican Tracey Mann had the strongest showing with 14-percent surge to second place behind Emporia state Senator Jim Barnett. The race’s other previous font-runners, Tim Huelskamp of Fowler and Rob Wasinger of Cottonwood Falls, both showed mild gains but placed third and fourth respectively.
The poll, conducted for KWCH-TV out of Wichita, shows Jim Barnett with 23 percent of the Republican vote and Mann drawing 20 percent of the vote. With a 4.6 percent margin of error, that puts Mann and Barnett is a numerical dead-heat.
Huelskamp polled at third with 18 percent of the vote with Wasinger drawing 11 percent.
Sue Boldra of Hays and Galva’s Marck Cobb came in fifth and six respectively with 8 percent and 3 percent of the vote.
The poll, which interviewed 1,500 Kansas adults in June showed that about 16 percent of people polled are still undecided.
Mann was the only candidate to show substantial gains from the previous poll conducted in February. He previously polled at 4 percent.
Huelskamp is the most popular among 18-34 year-old while Barnett takes the 65-plus voting group.
The poll results come less than five weeks before the Aug. 4 primary, which will whittle down the race from six candidate to one. That candidate will face Democrat Alan Jilka in the November general election.
