OBITUARY: Laurene E. Selack

Mrs. Laurene E. Selack, 96, of McPherson, passed away at 9:12 a.m., Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, unexpectedly at McPherson Hospital, McPherson.
Laurene was born Sept. 12, 1915, in McPherson, the daughter of William C. and Katherine “Kate” Elizabeth (Messer) Schlatter.
Laurene attended Roosevelt Elementary, McPherson Junior High, and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, in 1933. She then attended McPherson College for two years and graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas, with a teaching degree and major in music and English, and a minor in psychology.
Laurene was a member of First Christian Church, McPherson, where she belonged to the Christian Women Fellowship, was a Stephen's Minister, and a member of the Home Builders Sunday school class, and served her church through the years in many other capacities.
Laurene was a homemaker. Through the years she was a music and English teacher having taught at Benedict, Kansas, Centerview country school near McPherson, and substitute teacher at McPherson Middle School and high school. She was the organist for the First Christian Church, McPherson, for more than 37 seven years, and a private piano and organ teacher throughout her adult life.
Laurene was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota, the Kansas and National Music Teachers Association, American Organ Guild, and the American Legion Auxiliary, and Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, both of McPherson.
Laurene E. Schlatter was united in marriage to Albert Henry Selack on May 25, 1941, in Wichita. Al died March 26, 1990.
Surviving family members include her children, Richard Selack of McPherson, Marilyn Woodard of St. Louis, and Rex Selack of McPherson; three grandchildren, Adam Woodard and his wife Ana, Nathan Woodard and his wife Gina, and Lucas Woodard, all of St. Louis; five great-grandchildren, Bennett Woodard, Ian Woodard, Isabel Woodard, Wyatt Woodard, and Fletcher Woodard; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Al Selack.
Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home in McPherson.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the First Christian Church, McPherson, with pastor Lynn Scott officiating.
The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, with the American Legion Post No. 24 Ladies Auxiliary providing member services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of McPherson, and they can be sent in care of the Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home; 222 W. Euclid St., McPherson, KS 67460.
