Evelyn Harmon, 93, of Hutchinson, died Friday, August 13, 2010, at The Hospice House of Reno County.
She was born April 13, 1917, in Wichita, Kansas, the fourth daughter of Jess R. and Leona Richardson. She was born of Friday the 13th and died Friday the 13th. She attended school in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1935. After two years at Wichita University, she worked for the Wichita Beacon Newspaper. She married Vern B. Minor on December 5, 1935. She was a homemaker until his death on June 7, 1960.
During her earlier married years, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church in scouting and as the cherub choir director. She served as Worthy Matron of the Order of The Eastern Star, Silver Leaf Chapter #464, obtaining a life membership. Upon the death of Vern, she successfully ran for office and was elected as Clerk of the Magistrate Court of Reno County, a position she held until retiring in 1967.
She married Richard Harmon on May 27, 1967, at which time she joined the family business, The Harmon Furniture Store, whic later became The Harmon Discout Furniture Warehouse. When Evelyn and Richard both retired from the business, they traveled throughout the world. After traveling and being avid golfers, they spent the four winter months at their home in Mesa, Ariz., playing golf and then spent the other eight months of the year at their home in Hutchinson.
Evelyn was peceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a brother. She was th elast surviving member of the Richardson family. She is survived by her husband, Richard, of th ehome; sons Gary Minor and his wife, Ann, McPherson, and Tom Minor and his wife, Carole Sue, of Mesa, Ariz.; three step-children, Robert Harmon of Bradfor, Mississippi, Richard (Kim) and his wife, Peggy, of Wichita Fall, Texas, and Kali Standish and her husband, Tom, of Kansas City; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2010, at Elliott Funeral Home, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson. A short grave-side service will follow at Hutchinson’s Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated for the Hutchinson Public Library, 901 N. Main St., or The Hospital House of Reno County, 1523 E. 20th Ave., Hutchinson.
