The McPherson Sentinel has chosen to endorse Salina Republican Tracey Mann for the 1st Congressional District GOP primary.
All of the 1st District candidates have something to offer the voters of the district, which made the task of endorsing a candidate difficult. Jim Barnett brings a wealth of experience on health care matters. Rob Wasinger would be able to hit the ground running if elected, thanks to his congressional experience. Tim Huelskamp is a passionate advocate for conservative causes. Sue Boldra makes several compelling points about the need for a citizen legislature. Marck Cobb has displayed a sincere desire to represent the district, and probably has the best national security background of the field.
But through interviews with the candidates and several months of interaction with the campaigns, The Sentinel believes Mann will best represent The Big First District and understands the issues that impact our everyday lives.
Mann has proven he has what it takes to speak on behalf of the district. The Quinter native understands agriculture, and its impact on the district, and we find that to be of upmost importance. The 1st District is home to thousands of farm families and hundreds of agriculture-related businesses.
In addition to his agricultural experience, the political newcomer’s plans to help the district continue to prosper are similar to the model used by McPherson business leaders when establishing the McPherson Industrial Development Co. He understands that schools and post offices are integral to the survival of communities and has promised to continue the annual 69-county tour started by Jerry Moran. We believe his time in the real estate industry has left him a firm understanding of what it takes to both attract and retain employers and given him the negotiation skills necessary to forge alliances in Congress.
We also believe Mann, not being part of the political game, can bring a fresh perspective to Congress.
The Sentinel believes Mann understands the issues that affect the 1st District and has what it takes to fill Moran’s shoes in Washington.
