There are days that one goes to the movies in the devout hope that one will not be lambasted with deep plots, challenging themes, edgy messages or glamorous girls in gooey gowns (well, maybe the last is OK).  Wouldn't it be nice to go to a show sans any embarrassing moments where your 6-year-old son or 80-year-old grandmother could laugh right along with you?  Well, put out the dog and bring in the cat and go see "Cats and Dogs:  The Revenge of Kitty Galore"- in 3D no less.
Back in 2001 it was revealed in the original "Cats and Dogs" of the secret world of canine and feline espionage that has roiled since ancient times and continues on to this very day.  It’s that old chestnut of the cunning duplicity of cats and the naïve loyalty of dogs in which each species is out to protect their mentally inferior human owners.  The hero of that show was Lou, the super spy beagle accidentally inducted into this secret war.  "Cats and Dogs" was the big break for beagles (the rightful leaders of dogs worldwide after decades of Collie oppression).  Since then a beagle has even won the Westminster Dog Show!
In the new 3D expose of animal intrigue we find Lou (voiced by Neil Patrick Harris) at the top of the dog spies while Butch (Nick Nolte) is still a flat foot field agent (funny how life imitates art, huh?).  A cat, of course, is up to no good again in the form of Kitty Galore (Bette Midler), a hairless hair- brained mad cat out for world domination.  Here we go again.  Our new rookie in the spy game is Diggs (John Marsden).  Diggs is a German Shepard, but Marsden can't do the accent so our hero is really all-American.  Lou sends Butch and Diggs out to find Kitty before disaster strikes.  They are joined by Seamus the pigeon (Katt Williams- Yeah, I thought he would do a cat voice, but that's Hollywood).  Ultimately, we get a really wild twist when cats and dogs work together-particularly a cat named Catherine (Christina Applegate) who is an agent for M.E.O.W.  Cat lover, dog lover or admirer of mentally challenged pigeons this show has something for everyone.
Lately it's been raining 3D films like, well, cats and dogs.  Some have been acclaimed but bad.  Others have been good but unacclaimed and most have been painful to the eye after a couple of hours.  This film really uses 3D very well making it a seamless part of the movie instead of a bunch of cheap shots.  Even the live action, non-CG scenes look pretty good. At 82 minutes running time one won't need more than one bottle of Visine afterwards.
Here's the very best part- there's a cartoon before the feature- The Road Runner and Coyote! In amazing 3D! Wiley E. Coyote falls from spectacular heights like never before.  This short cartoon is worth the price of the admission alone.  If you have lung trouble bring oxygen because it's hard to catch one's breath when laughing that hard.
This reviewer rarely gives all out A+ to a show, but if you had a bad day at the office this film is just what the “dogtor” ordered. Chuckles Galore.
