Gubernatorial candidate Senator Sam Brownback has already stepped out on the campaign trail with fellow Republican and Attorney General candidate Derek Schmidt. Wednesday, the Brownback campaign released further details of Brownback’s Road Map for Protecting Kansas Families, which includes several initiatives that would include the secretary of state’s office.
"We have an outstanding nominee in State Senator Derek Schmidt. He has lead efforts in the legislature to strengthen our laws and understands the challenges our state faces when it comes to keeping Kansans safe," said Brownback, who noted that having a like-minded candidate in the secretary of state’s office will help ensure goals are met.
The specifics of Brownback’s plan to protect families includes creating an interagency task force to monitor and coordinate drug prevention and anti-drug policies between agencies. He also wants to bring the Kansas’ Prescription Drug Monitoring Project online and expand its effectiveness, which will give residents greater ability to monitor an stop prescription drug abuse.
And Brownback said he wants to see a dedicated funding stream for substance abuse treatment programs both inside and outside Kansas’ prison facilities.
"Ensuring public safety is a core responsibility of government," Brownback said. "Illegal drugs are at the heart of crime in our state. A Brownback Administration will work with the Kansas Legislature and law enforcement to strengthened enforcement of our laws, provide officers with modern day investigation tools, and develop resources to help end the cycle of drug abuse."
Brownback is looking to replace outgoing Governor Mark Parkinson. He is facing Democrat candidate Tom Holland.
