Today, First District Congressman Jerry Moran, announced that he is supporting Derek Schmidt for Kansas Attorney General.
"A year ago, I encouraged Derek to run for attorney general," said Moran, R-Hays. "I have known Derek for many years, and he has the right combination of experience in government and law, along with a deep understanding of Kansas, to be a great attorney general for our state. I am very happy to support him."
Schmidt, R-Independence, has represented the 67,000 residents of the 15th State Senate district in Southeast Kansas since 2001. Since 2005, Schmidt has served as the Republican majority leader, a position Moran held when he was a state senator. Schmidt also is a former chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and is a founding member of the Agriculture Law section of the Kansas Bar Association. He has served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum, as special counsel to Governor Bill Graves, as an assistant Kansas attorney general, as a city prosecutor and as a private practice attorney.
"I'm so very pleased to have the support of Congressman Moran in this race for attorney general," Schmidt said. "In my rural Southeast Kansas home, like in the Big First, it's important to have strong leaders who understand the needs of rural Kansas."
