Representative Jerry Moran on Monday petitioned for the removal of two metal bridges that separate the U.S. and Mexico.
The bridges, where were discovered in August, cross the Rio Grande River and serve as flood control structures. They are owned by the International Boundary and Water Commission. Many believe the bridges are being used by individuals to cross into the U.S.
Moran, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate Seat being vacated by Senator Sam Brownback, said a lack of security has made the bridges a liability for the U.S. and asked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to remove the bridges or have them fully secure. The structures, Moran stated in a letter to Napolitano, highlight “the failure of the federal government to secure our borders.”
These two bridges provide illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and possibly even terrorists quick and easy access into our country,” Moran said. “Their presence highlights the failure of the federal government to secure our borders. Taxpayers have spent billions of dollars on border security measures, including fencing. Yet, not far from a section of fencing, these bridges undermine efforts to secure the border and frustrate taxpayers who want to see the borders secured now.”
Representative Lynn Jenkins joined Moran in the request.
