SALINA–The McPherson College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) with a 5-4 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University Saturday morning at Salina Central High School.
The Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0 KCAC) grabbed an early lead by taking two of three doubles matches. Brittany Zipf and Besa Bwalya edged Paola Vargas and Chelsea Bearrick, 8-6, at the No. 1 spot, while Deiah Curtis and Zoe Bouwmeester topped Mallory Lantz and Jessica Smith, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. The Coyotes (2-5, 1-1 KCAC) accepted a forfeit victory at No. 3 doubles.
McPherson won three of the four contested singles matches as Bwalya and Bouwmeester posted 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, while Curtis defeated Bearrick, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to clinch the match.
Kansas Wesleyan's Brianna Mendoza (No. 5) and Katie Andrews (No. 6) received forfeit victories, while Vargas outlasted Zipf, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7), at the No. 1 singles spot.
The Bulldogs take to the road Thursday to face league favorite Southwestern College (9-1, 0-0 KCAC).
