WINFIELD–The McPherson College softball team dropped both halves of a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) doubleheader against Southwestern College Saturday at the Broadway Recreation Complex.
The Lady Builders (17-12, 5-3) took game one, 9-8, in 10 innings and game two by a 3-2 score.
Game 1– Southwestern 9, McPherson 8 (10 innings)
Southwestern jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and 6-3 after six innings before McPherson rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.
Neither team was able to score in the eighth or ninth innings, but the Bulldogs pushed ahead as Destiny Bacon rapped an RBI single to score pinch-runner Jordynn Corea, then came around to score on a double to right-center by Taylor Hires-Caulk.
The Builders responded with a sacrifice bunt to open the bottom of the 10th followed by four straight singles capped by a two-run bloop hit to shallow right off the bat of Sydni Fulks to win the game.
Taylor Perez and Chelsea Conrad each had RBI doubles in the fifth sandwiched around a Jessica Jones RBI single.
In the seventh, Jenna Christensen had a two-run double to deep left. Erica Almaraz was brought in as a pinch runner and scored on the next pitch as Ali Smith singled to right.
Jones led McPherson with three hits, while Perez added two hits including a double.
MacKenzie Lyons had three hits and a pair of RBIs to lead Southwestern while Sierra Meyer and Kayleen Gonzalez each had three hits and scored twice as the Lady Builders pounded out 16 hits.
Both starting pitchers went the distance in the opener. Hannah Foltz picked up the win for Southwestern, scattering 10 hits and three walks while striking out one in 10 innings.
Christie Betker struck out eight for the Bulldogs, but took the loss after allowing 16 hits in 9 1/3 innings.
Game 2 – Southwestern 3, McPherson 2
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in both the first and second innings, but could only push across one run as Conrad scored on a Bacon RBI single in the first inning.
Southwestern tied the game in the fifth as Paige Hall scored on a Gonzalez RBI single to shallow left-center but saw a chance to take the lead disappear after leaving the bases loaded.
The Lady Builders did move out in front in the sixth, taking advantage of two Bulldog errors to plate a pair of runs on RBI singles by Gonzalez and Fulks.
Jones led off the McPherson seventh with a bunt single but was erased when Conrad reached on a fielder's choice. After Maile Deutsch was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, Conrad came around to make it a one-run game when Christensen singled to left. A subsequent error on the play left the Bulldogs with runners second and third with just one out, but Lyons was able to secure the victory for Southwestern with a groundout and a strikeout.
Lyons scattered eight hits and a walk while striking out two en route to a complete-game victory for the Builders.
Sydney Lang threw five solid innings before running into trouble in the sixth. She ended up conceding three runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out one in 5 1/3 innings and was charged with the loss. Shelby Bonn (Shawnee, Kan., Mill Valley HS) came on in relief and got out of the inning with just two pitches that resulted in a caught stealing and a groundout on a bunt.
Christensen had two hits, including a double, to lead McPherson at the plate. Perez added a double, while Conrad scored twice.
Gonzalez had two of Southwestern's five hits and two of three RBIs.
The Bulldogs (17-15, 2-4 KCAC) host league co-leader Friends University (14-16, 5-1 KCAC) in another KCAC doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. First pitch for game one from Bulldog Park is slated for 2 p.m.
