WICHITA— The McPherson College women's track and field team set four school records and claimed one individual champion en route to a fifth-place finish Friday night at the 2018 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Adair-Austin Stadium.
Host Friends University ran away with the team title (346.5 points) and Southwestern College took a strong second place (95) while Sterling College (59) edged out Saint Mary (58.5) and McPherson (57) for third.
The majority of the Bulldogs' points came in the sprints with three finalists in both the 100 and 400 and two in 200. McPherson also came home second in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays while adding a fifth-place in the 4x800.
Amy Braimbridge played a role in three of the four new marks. She won the 400 in a personal-, school-, and championship-record time of 54.97 seconds, knocking an entire second off her preliminary time. Braimbridge also took second in the 200 with a 24.35 clocking. Both times erased marks she had posted earlier in the year and were NAIA automatic-qualifying efforts.
Braimbridge also anchored McPherson's 4x100 and 4x400 relays to runner-up finishes. The 4x400 team of Genevie Rivera, Tatelyn Lasley, Ané Archuleta and Braimbridge broke the four-minute mark to set a new MC standard of 3:59.67. In the 4x100, the quartet of Miaya Sample, Destiny Johnson, Diamond Blaylock-Norris and Braimbridge finished in 48.03.
The final school mark was set in the 4x800 where Taylor Dreiling, Rachel Foreman, Archuleta and Samantha Nelson stopped the clock in 10:30.25 to place fifth. The quartet chopped a full two seconds off the previous mark (10:32.27), which had stood for four years.
Blaylock-Norris was a double place-winner for the Bulldogs, finishing fourth in the 100 (12.56) and sixth in the 200 (26.04) - both in personal-best times. Johnson and Sample took seventh and eighth, respectively, in a photo finish in the 100. Both were credited with times of 12.75 seconds. In the 400, Rivera took sixth (59.27), while Lasley was eighth (62.78). Both set PRs in the event, although Lasley's (61.10) came in her preliminary heat.
The Bulldogs' remaining points came from seventh-places finishes by Archuleta in the 800 (2:28.18) and Dejalynn Saili in the discus (35.63m; 116-11).
Among those establishing new PRs at the championships were Cierra Lee in the 100 (12.83), Sample in the 200 (26.75), Dreiling in the 5,000 (20:48.14), LeaAnn Myers in the 3,000 steeplechase (13:21.87) and both Tameria Macon and Ilanna Moyer in the shot put. Macon posted a mark of 9.42 meters (30-11), while Moyer had a top effort of 8.97 meters (29-5.25).
Following the championships, Brooke Racette was recognized as the squad's KCAC Champions of Character representatives for the 2018 outdoor track and field season.
There are two competitions remaining on the McPherson schedule prior to the national meet. Select distance runners are slated to compete in the Prairie Fire Half-Marathon in Wichita on Sunday morning. McPherson will also send a select number of athletes to Emporia next Saturday (May 12) to compete in the Sam Williams Last Chance Qualifer.
