Despite getting 28 hits for the day, the McPherson Summer Bullpups were out matched twice on Saturday at Grant Complex as Hutchinson came to town and swept a doubleheader 11-9 and 14-10.
In game one, the Bullpups poured across five runs in the second inning to break a 2-2 tie and take a 7-2 advantage. After Hutchinson added three runs over the next two innings, McPherson pushed across two more in the bottom of the fourth to take what seemed to be a comfortable 9-5 lead with just three innings to play.
Unfortunately, Hutchinson pounded five runs across in the sixth and added one more in the top of the seventh to gain the 11-9 come from behind victory over the host Bullpups.
While McPherson hurt themselves on defense with five errors, the Bullpup offense smacked out 14 hits, including four by Shane Starkel and two a piece by Jakob Feil, Zane Myers and Brayden Stout. Starkel also had credit for three runs batted in, while Honestee Whittker and Garrett Farney each had two. Three Bullpup hits went for extra bases as Myers knocked out a double while Feil and Whittker each smashed a triple.
Chandler Wiard started game one on the mound for the Bullpups and went three and two-thirds, giving up eight hits, five earned run, five walks and getting two strikeouts. Brayden Stout took the loss when he came on in relief and pitched two and two-thirds, giving up just three hits, six runs - of which only three were earned - and walking five. Jakob Feil finished out the game for the final two outs.
Even though the Bullpups offense accounted for another 14 hits in game two, McPherson lost to Hutchinson again, this time 14-10 as defensive errors proved costly with just six of Hutchinson’s 14 runs being earned due to six Bullpup errors on the field.
Hutchinson scored three runs in each of the first and third innings, while the Bullpups scored two in the first, four in the second and another pair in the third to hold a slim 8-6 advantage midway through the game. Three runs in the fourth, four more in the sixth and one more in the seventh by Hutchinson spelled out a loss for the Bullpups as they could only get another two runs in the bottom of the sixth and took the 14-10 defeat.
Three hits in the game for the Bullpups Jakob Feil gave him offensive totals for the day of five-for-seven with two walks, four runs scored, and one run batted in to go along with a triple in game one, two doubles in game two and one stolen base.
Honestee Whittker also had three hits in game two, while Zane Myers, Brett Eilts and Chandler Wiard each had two. Myers and Eilts each accounted for three runs batted in, with Eilts damage coming on a double.
Once again, the Bullpups were hurt by play on the defensive side of the game as they had six errors in game two, giving them 11 errors for the doubleheader by seven different players.
Zane Myers took the mound to start game two for McPherson and lasted three and two-thirds, giving up six hits, five earned runs and four walks while striking out two in taking the loss. Jakob Feil and Shane Starkel each took a turn in relief as well.
