The McPherson High School girls tennis team hosted their invitational on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Pups split into three teams, team red, team white and extras. Both the red team and white team finished in the top three by the end of the day, with team red taking first place with 45 points and team white taking third with 37 points.

"Super proud of all the girls tonight," head coach Tyler Brown said. "A lot of girls finishing high in the results in an open draw."

The Achilles Sisters of Ashley and Sydney were the only two for McPherson had a first-place finish after a spectacular performance in the doubles bracket for team white. The team of Taylor Bruce and CeAnna Allen weren't at their best but managed to take third place in their doubles match for the red team.

"The Achilles Sisters have to feel confident and proud of their results today," Brown said. "They did something tonight I'm not sure has ever been done. A doubles team that was not on the top McPherson team won the doubles draw. That is a testament of the depth we have this year."

Both were able to communicate well and took advantage of the lobs thrown at them. It was then Ashley was the on the attack, hitting overheads during the finals against Newton High School.

"I think we did good today. We did a good job keeping each other up and encouraging each other. It makes plays a whole lot easier," Ashley said.

In the singles bracket in the singles bracket, Rachel Carlson led team red with a second place finish after an intense battle with Jessica Sharpe of Valley Center High School. Sharpe took the singles title in an 8-4 victory over Carlson.

"Rachel Carlson showed tonight why she has qualified for state every year," Brown said. "She made it to the finals of the singles draw in her first tournament of the year playing singles."

Brown was pleased on the performance of her girls throughout the tournament.

"I could go on and on about every girl but that may turn into a 3 page essay. I just hope all the girls know how proud Coach Lindfors and I are of them. We have an extremely talented team and they are fun to watch. Keep up the great play girls."

The Bullpups' next invitational will be at Salina Central High School next Saturday on Sept.8. First serve will be 8:30 p.m.
