After starting the season with four consecutive road games, the Central Christian College volleyball team finally got a chance to play on their home court on Tuesday evening. The Tigers welcomed the USAO Drovers to Jerry E. Alexander Arena, looking for their first win of the season. Unfortunately the Drovers weren't very gracious guests, and they handed the Tigers their fifth straight sets loss of the year.
The opening set was extremely competitive and the scoring went back and forth between the two teams. The Tigers held a slim lead at 16-15, but in the end, couldn't stay out and front, and the Drovers came from behind to take set one, 25-23. After that close loss in set number one, the Tigers struggled to get anything going in the final two sets. The Drovers continued to ride their momentum, taking set two 25-16 and then clinching the match with a 25-8 win in the final set.
There were three statistical categories that jumped off the stat sheet. The first is the number of kills that each team recorded. The Tigers actually had two more kills in the match than the Drovers, 32-30, but the difference was the number of hitting errors each team committed. The Drovers had their 30 kills on 107 attempts with just 10 errors. The Tigers tallied 32 kills on 119 swings, but had a whopping 29 errors. Another telling statistical category came on the serve. The Tigers had just one service ace and 5 service errors while the Drovers notched 6 aces and 4 errors. The third statistical anomaly came in the area of defense. At the net, the Drovers had seven team blocks, four of them of the solo variety, while the Tiger had zero.
Individually, the Tigers were led by Marissa Waddel. She had a team high nine kills on 36 swings. Second on the team in kills was senior Rebekah Glessner who recorded six kills in 34 attempts. On defense, two Tigers tallied double digit dig totals. Freshman setter, McKenzee Cook ended up with 11, while senior Libero, Desiree Padilla, led the team with 19.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-5 on the season. They will get another chance to rectify that on Thursday when they host the Mid-America Christian University Evangels. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm.
