Jeff Benito has been named as McPherson College’s new head men’s and women’s tennis coach. He becomes the fifth coach for McPherson since the program was reinstated in 2006.
The announcement was made Thursday by McPherson College Athletic Director Doug Quint.
Benito comes to McPherson after a successful four-year stint as the head coach at Cypress College, a two-year school located just outside of Long Beach, Calif., in Cypress, Calif.
“We are excited to have Jeff joining our head coaching staff here are McPherson College,” Quint said. “Jeff has extensive connections in the tennis community with his work at the collegiate level and through the USTA. He is a proven successful collegiate tennis coach with international recruiting experience. Jeff did an outstanding job building Cypress College into one of the premier tennis programs in the state of California. I look forward to working with Jeff as he takes McPherson College tennis to the next level.”
While at Cypress, Benito guided the men’s team to three consecutive conference championships, starting with the 2009 season, and a 66-22 overall record in dual matches. The Chargers went 6-12 in his first season at the helm, but more than doubled that win total the following season with a 20-4 overall record. The squad continued its winning ways with an 18-3 mark in 2010 and a 22-3 record this past season.
Benito owns four Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year awards, and was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coach of the Year following the 2011 season.
Two of Benito’s athletes have won ITA All-American awards.
In addition to working at Cypress, Benito served his community as a USTA Junior Team Tennis Coordinator and a tennis services representative. As a coordinator, he oversaw a program of 11 area leagues that contained over 300 teams and approximately 6,000 players. He also was responsible for the planning and coordination of three championship events per year.
Prior to Cypress, Benito spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Riverside City College. The men’s team posted an overall record of 60-20 during his tenure, while the women’s team was 56-13.
Benito has a bachelor’s degree in movement and sport science from the University of La Verne (Calif.) and a master’s in kinesiology from California Baptist University.
