If you score in every inning, chances are pretty good you’re going to win.
McPherson’s Junior American Legion scored runs in all six of its at-bats in the opener here Tuesday night against Hutchinson to key an 8-7 victory.
Hutchinson jumped out early in the nightcap and went on for a 12-3 triumph to earn the split.
The halve left McPherson at 8-16 heading into Thursday’s home game against Emporia, expected to be played at Grant Complex with a 6 p.m. start. It is hoped the fence at Light Capital Diamond will be fixed soon.
Post 24 sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the first game before having to hang on.
Zack Likely was the winning pitcher, with Aaron Marshall getting the final five outs to earn a save.
“Our offense did a good job of scoring in every inning and keeping the pressure on Hutch,” McPherson coach Craig Marshall said. “We put the ball in play, striking out only three times.”
Aaron Marshall had a big game at the dish, rapping out three hits and scoring three runs. Seth Sterling added two hits and scored two runs. Aaron Elsasser also scored two runs.
In the nightcap, Hutchinson scored five runs in the first due to some faulty fielding, but McPherson charged within 6-3 before Hutch scored the final six runs.
“Our defense wasn’t sharp in two innings of game two and that cost us a chance at a sweep,” Craig Marshall said.
Aaron Marshall, Sterling and Cody Persson all had two hits, with Persson knocking in two runs.
