If this was indeed their last game against McPherson High, the Newton Railers were poised Tuesday to end the series with perhaps the most shocking upset of the 115 games played between the teams.

When Jenson Kingsley drained a 3-pointer with 6:27 left in the third quarter, the 3-10 Railers had the 10-2 Bullpups down 32-21 in the fabled Roundhouse, where MHS had won 53 of the previous 59 meetings.

But to their credit, the Bullpups overcame their case of fumbles, stumbles and bumbles with a gut-check rally of major proportions, winding up with a 52-44 victory.

Newton, which has decided to terminate the series with MHS, definitely came to play and took the game to the Bullpups for 2 1/2 quarters before normalcy returned to MHS’ world as it outscored the Railers 33-12 to close it out.

The game left MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon baffled, as the Bullpups were able to avoid what would have been the most humbling loss in his 17-year career.

“I’m just mystified with some of the things we did tonight,” Kinnamon said. “We did things I’d never even seen us do. I don’t know how we can even dream of doing them. In the end, they really picked it up and their intensity was good. They kept fighting, fighting and fighting, but that’s a game they shouldn’t have to do that if they make good, solid plays.”

Don Cameron’s Railers deserve a lot of credit. They used their hustle and a sticky zone defense, as well as a strong rebounding effort, to lead 27-21 at the half, not to mention 15 points by Kingsley, who hit a trey at the halftime buzzer to send the Railers into the locker room on an emotional high.

Kingsley then scored two more buckets to start the second half for the 11-point lead.

But from there, the MHS defense turned up the heat. Newton would score only 12 points in the final 14 minutes and once the Bullpups took the lead at 35-34, they were able to stretch it out to as many as 11.

Travell Robinson came up big for MHS with 14 points and six rebounds. Chase Miller added 11 points and Kyler Kinnamon came off the bench for 10.

Kingsley finished with 25 points for the Railers, and Austin Krogmeier added 10, but the remaining Railers combined for just nine points.

MHS now has a week off before Derby comes to town Tuesday.

The MHS JVs were a 57-42 winner behind 12 points by Keaton Sorenson and 11 by Nick Torres. The freshmen were defeated 52-28, with Nathan Nutter’s eight points tops.
