A Wellington family is in immediate need. Melody and Jerry Wells have a 10-month-old son, Cody, who just had a craniotomy. He has  Craniosynostosis. This condition results in restricted skull and brain growth.
Doctors went in and took out a two-inch section of Cody's skull, because the soft spot at the front of his skull closed at an angle. Melody says they are fortunate their son is still alive.
"...As soon as they cut the two inches out, his brain expanded and started pulsing again." Melody Wells said. "So we got really close to losing our son and we didn't even know anything was wrong." The Wells family found out Thursday their son will need to wear a $2,800 helmet for two months.
"The helmet will shift everything forward to close up the gap," the child's mother explained. However the family has hit a snag. Wells said what is particularly strange is her insurance says the helmet is covered under major medical benefits.
"But the company that makes these helmets will not file my insurance because they say my insurance never pays," Wells said.
Now the family must scramble to try and find a way to pay for the helmet so their son can live.
"We're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard spot," Wells said. "My husband is unemployed right now...and I work at Wal-Mart. And [Cody] has to have this helmet in 10 days."
The helmet is being currently being made, but the family won't be allowed to have it until they come up with at least half of the $2,800.
An account has been set up at First National Bank, 206 East Harvey Avenue in Wellington — The Cody Wells Medical Account — for people who wish to donate to the family's efforts. Wells said they plan on setting up change jars at various locations around Wellington. The jars will have Cody's picture along with a paragraph explaining the situation. The Wells family is doing all they can in hopes of collecting money that can help them pay for the helmet.
