A tornado watch has been issued by the National Weather Service and will be in effect until 7 p.m., tonight.

The NWS’s hazardous weather outlook predicts strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon through tonight which could produce hail, high winds, and even tornadoes.

By mid- to late afternoon, severe thunderstorm development will be possible along the Interstate 35 corridor, which includes Sumner, Segwick, Butler, Harper and Cowley counties, the NWS reports. If moisture and instablitiy increase from what has already been predicted there could be a few strong and long-lived tornadoes as a result of the very strong wind shear.

Thunderstorms are expected to shift into southeast Kansas as the night progresses, though the threat of tornadoes should decrease, NWS says. Heavy rainfall and localized flooding are possible.

The rest of the week could see a few lingering thunderstorms with a chance of snow Thursday night through Friday night in central Kansas as well as parts of southcentral Kansas.
