Since its beginning in 1901, The Wellington Daily News has been ahead of the curve when it comes to covering news, sports and community events. Now the paper is making big changes on how it produces news to translate that same spirit into something readers will benefit from.
As of June 8, 2011, the Wellington Daily News will go from a tri-weekly printed publication to a weekly publication. The paper is also getting a makeover, changing from the traditional newspaper size to a tabloid format.
The Wellington Daily News will continue to feature local names, faces and business not only in Wellington but throughout Sumner County.
Stephen Wade, Group Publisher for Kansas for The Wellington Daily News’ parent company, Gatehouse Media, says it’s not a matter of lost revenue, but lost opportunity that has brought about the change.
"This is an exciting opportunity for your newspaper and this community. We believe this will demonstrate that Wellington is a progressive town ready to leap ahead. We noticed last fall how eager this town was to embrace Twitter during the disappointing lottery commission hearings. That spoke loudly and positively about Wellington." said Wade.
With two publications gone a week, reporters will have more time to produce stories, photos, video and more of what readers want.
"Our readers will have access to continually updated news every day.
You will see us using more video and social media." Wade said.
Moving more news to the web is a trend driven by the readers themselves, Wade said, though some are sure to be upset by the news.
"Some will likely try to turn this into a negative. That cannot be farther from the truth. We opened a new newspaper in Andover earlier this year utilizing this format. We wanted to try it and test it. The Andover American has been warmly received in that community, and I believe that model works in Wellington." said Wade.
Weekly subscription rates will decrease from their current levels, so subscribers will see an extension of their current subscription expiration date.
To help staff at the Wellington Daily News spearhead the change will be new publisher, Randy Mitchell.
Mitchell is the publisher of The Newton Kansan and The McPherson Sentinel. The Sentinel serves as a central printing facility for the GateHouse Media newspaper group which includes the Wellington Daily News.
Mitchell is a graduate of Fitchburg State University, Mass. He comes to McPherson with five years of publishing experience and 23 years of circulation experience.
"Randy joined our company last October and has quickly proved to be a positive addition and a great leader. I am excited he has accepted this opportunity. I know he is eager to get started." said Wade.
