Rep. Tim Huelskamp on Thursday offered comments as part of the House’s discussion on abortion and called for the defunding of Planned Parenthood.
The Fowler Republican is father to four adopted children. During his testimony, Huelskamp shared his adoption experiences and asked that law makers consider alternatives for women considering abortions.
“Far too often too many women, too many families turn to abortion as the only abortion when they discover they are unexpectedly pregnant…If we are going to encourage women and families not to abort their babies, we need to offer alternatives….Let me speak directly to those that might be considering abortion, there are alternatives, there are opportunities, there are caring Americans that would love to participate in adoption and would love to provide assistance,” he said.
His call to defund Planned Parenthood is not a new request by lawmakers. Currently the not-for-profit organization generates 34 percent of its revenue from government grants. The organization, among other things, provides abortion services.
