The Button Hunt

The McPherson County All Schools Day Button Hunt will begin on Friday, May 5. This year there will be both a medallion hunt and a virtual hunt, each with a $250 prize for the person finding the medallion or identifying the virtual item and location.

ROWENA ARLENE TURNER

Rowena Arlene Turner, 96, passed away April 20, 2023, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born December 22, 1926, in Neosho Falls, KS, the daughter of Leo and Myrtle Brammer Skinner. She was a school secretary but found her true passion teaching stained glass. She enjoyed that for over 20 years. She was a member of Garden City Methodist Church. While residing in Inman, she enjoyed attending services at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. Rowena married Melvin Turner on December 28, 1943, in Rocky Ford, CO. He passed away in 2003. Survivors include daughter, Melva (James) Barlow, Inman, KS; a sister, Carol (Bill) Manion, Topeka, KS; grandchildren, J. Scott (Janet) Barlow, Mark (Dorothy) Baier, Mel (Ashley) Baier, Ryan (Chevese) Turner, and Lindsay Turner; and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Linda Baier; one son, Michael Turner; one sister; three brothers; and one grandchild, Sean Barlow. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Inman Funeral Home, Inman, KS. A private family burial will be held at a later date. VILA MARIE COOPER

Vila Marie Cooper, 81, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2023, surrounded by family at Salina Regional Health Center. Throughout her life, she cooked for the McPherson High School and the McPherson Senior Center. Many might have known her also while working at Daylight Donuts in McPherson. She was born on January 26, 1942, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Harold and Opal (Harder) Lafferty. She grew up on a farm outside of Inman, KS. She graduated from Windom High School in 1960. On November 25, 1961, Vila was united in marriage to Robert Cooper at the Andover Lutheran Church in Windom, KS. This union was blessed with two daughters, Kay and Patti. She was a member of Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors of America. Vila enjoyed cooking for the entire family for birthdays and holidays. Her specialty being fried chicken. She also enjoyed collecting owls and would tell everyone, “No two are alike!” In earlier years, she enjoyed family vacations with the kids and in later years, she and Bob traveled on their own. Above all, Vila loved spending time with her family. Survivors include: two daughters, Kay Graham and husband, Jerry, of McPherson, KS and Patti Cooper of McPherson, KS; her brothers, Keith Lafferty of Inman, KS and Bob Lafferty of Bishop, GA; and many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Bob in 2022; her parents; brother, Jim Lafferty; and sisters, Doris Richards and Sharon Lafferty. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, April 28, 2023, at the McPherson Cemetery. SANDRA ELIZABETH BERG

Sandra Elizabeth Berg, 64, of Lindsborg, Kansas, passed away on October 11, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. She was born on Febr uary 21, 1958, in Lindsborg Kansas to Ernest William and Thelma Lois (Keeling) Berg. Cremation has taken place. Sandi was preceded in death by her parents. Sandi graduated from Lindsborg High School in 1976 and went on to attend Hesston College in Kansas to earn her Degree in Nursing. She was employed at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Sandi enjoyed traveling, knitting, bird watching, drawing, writing and spending time with friends. She was always researching something new and exciting. She is survived by sisters of the heart: Cynthia Welch of McPherson, Ks, Debbie (Mark) Mock of Hutchinson, Ks., Heike (Toby) Karnes of Lindsborg, Ks; Brothers of the heart: Gene Ellis of Salina, Ks and Wesley Bierig of Salina, Ks. Nieces and nephews of the heart: Jeremy, Christopher, Tori and Alyssa Mock; Samantha, Corbin, Anna and Grant Karnes. A celebration of life is planned for May 21, 2023, from 2pm-5pm at the Lindsborg Masonic Lodge, 112 S. Main Street, Lindsborg, Ks.
