Thoughts from the 2023 CWS

OMAHA, Nebraska – Now that the 2023 men’s College World Series (CWS) came to a not-so-exciting conclusion Monday night with the LSU Tigers drubbing Florida 18-4 in the final game of the championship series, I figured I would share my thoughts on the annual spectacle that takes place in Omaha.

MHS cheer squad successful at UCA camp

EL DORADO, Kansas – Earning a trophy to represent one’s school can be a hard task to accomplish, but the McPherson High School varsity cheer team tripled that feat as the team brought home three trophies in four days at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Cheer Camp hosted by Butler Community College on June 16-19.

DARLENE SULLIVAN

Darlene Sullivan, 78, of Hillsboro, Ks, went to her heavenly home on June 17, 2023. She was born in Lincoln County, Kansas at her family’s home on August 26, 1944, to Frederick & Esther Coopple. Darlene grew up in McPherson and lived much of her adult life in Salina. She had numerous jobs throughout her life which took her to several states and many interesting places. A few of her jobs included working on a harvest crew, driving a semi-truck, and cooking for college students. Friends and family loved to hear Darlene recount the wild adventures and situations she found herself in. Darlene is survived by her two sisters; Louise Becker of Moundridge, Ks, and Joyce Prigmore of Phoenix, AZ; her two sons Mark Coopple (Kimberly) of Salina, Ks; Danny Brayton (Robin) of McPherson, KS; and numerous extended family members. Darlene was a friend to many. She had a gift for conversations and loved making those around her laugh. She will be greatly missed by many friends and family members. Private family services to be held. Arrangements are by Affordable Cremations Plus, Wichita, Ks.

PHYLLIS KOENIG

Phyllis Ann Koenig, 90, of McPherson, KS, and formerly of Kansas City and Eureka, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2023, surrounded by family at The Cedars, McPherson. Phyllis was a retired hospital administrator for Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. Phyllis was born on December 8, 1932, in Poplar Bluff, MO, the daughter of Robert Rezin and Hettie Jane (Simmons) Wood. She graduated high school from Poplar Bluff, MO. On October 23, 1954, Phyllis was united in marriage to Richard Dean Koenig in Poplar Bluff. This union was blessed with three children, Cheryl, Steve, and Judy. Survivors include: her loving husband of 68 years, Richard Koenig; three children, Cheryl (Galen) Swisher of Kula, HI, Steve (Connie) Koenig of McPherson, KS, and Judy (Robert) Sanders of Evans, GA; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Robert Wood, Virginia Davison, and Kenneth Wood; and a great-grandson, Hendrix Koenig. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 29, 2023, at McPherson Cemetery with Rev. Ron Pracht officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to The Cedars Special Care Unit in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460. Teutons break in new field

INMAN, Kansas – There’s a brand new field and a brand new look to the 2023 Inman High School football team, as the Teutons completed their first workouts of the season last week following a camp that was held on a freshly built facility.
