Area roundup: County schools qualify for state

As the six area high schools begin to close out their fall sports schedules, it is exciting to news nearly all around the county.Exciting in that four area volleyball programs will take the stage on Friday and Saturday, October 27-28 in their respective state tournaments including Elyria Christian in Class 1A Division II, Little River looking to repeat in Class 1A Division I, Inman in Class 2A and Smoky Valley in Class 3A.

We have now entered the back half of October and all the fall sports have begun to wind down.All six of the McPherson area high schools remain actively finishing up seasons for football, volleyball, tennis and cross-country, with each looking for strong regular season finishes to be followed by success in the post-season.Again, we may not have gotten full information on a few events, but we do have tidbits on all the teams and activities for Canton/Galva, Elyria Christian, Inman, Little River, Moundridge and Smoky Valley.Here is a recap of what we do have for each school covering the week of October 2 – October 7:CANTON/GALVA EAGLESEagle Football = On Friday the Eagles traveled to Beloit to battle with St.

Bullpups slide past Mulvane in comeback effort

MULVANE, Kansas – One week removed from a heartbreaking last-second homecoming loss to Wellington, the McPherson High School football team regained its form by getting back above .500 on the season with a convincing 28-10 road win over Mulvane.An improbable touchdown pass with 2.9 seconds remaining crushed the hearts of McPherson players and fans last Friday in a 23-21 loss to Wellington, but McPherson rebounded with an 18-point victory over the Wildcats Friday night to reach 4-3 on the season.McPherson would not turn its victory convincing until late in the game, as the Bullpups fought to overcome an early 10-0 deficit after Mulvane took a 10-point lead with four minutes and 49 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Conway Springs glides past Inman with convincing win

INMAN, Kansas – On a night where winds reached over 40 miles per hour and seniors were being honored, the Conway Springs Cardinals swooped in and flew away with a 37-8 victory over Inman Friday night during the Teutons’ final home game of the season.Following a long string of success over the past few seasons that have included multiple state championship game runs at the class 1A level, the 2023 Inman Teutons are now off to a 2-5 start following a 29-point loss to physical Conway Springs team Friday night.After an opening-quarter 48-yard touchdown by the Cardinals made it a 7-0 game heading into the second quarter, Inman drove the ball deep into the red zone before facing a fourth down and two.

Lady Pups claim second at 4A state tennis

WINFIELD, Kansas – The close of the high school girls tennis season saw familiar faces with a medal hung around their neck, as all six of the McPherson Lady Pups that traveled to the class 4A state tournament finished in the top 12 while McPherson captured second place as a team.Following a team championship in regionals, McPherson qualified all six of its players for the class 4A state girls tennis tournament on Friday, October 13 through Saturday, October 14.
