Spice Up Your Life is a weekly recipe column by Lindsey Young, who describes herself as an enthusiastic amateur cook and can be reached through her website at spiceupkitchen.net.International cuisine website “Saveur” features an article called “Pasta’s Predecessor: The History of Gnocchi,” that I found really interesting when trying to figure out how the little potato dumplings came to be.As with all traditional foods, there is controversy about where in Italy the dish originated, as well as when it was first developed, but according to the article, there are references to gnocchi all the way back to the Renaissance, which is pretty neat.Historical gnocchi was made with a variety of ingredients, and if you start searching, you’ll find modern chefs love to play with it, too.

MMS Lady Pups begin basketball season

Another season of rich basketball tradition is underway in McPherson in the form of seventh grade basketball, as the McPherson Middle School seventh grade A and B teams opened their seasons with losses to Salina Lakewood on Tuesday, October 31.After last year’s seventh grade Lady Pups navigated the season with a perfect 12-0 record under head coach Matt Sandbo, previous eighth grade head basketball coach Heidi Ricke moved down to the seventh grade ranks to lead the Lady Pups in 2023.Despite receiving strong performances up and down the roster, the McPherson A team fell to Salina Lakewood 36-20 while the B team fell 27-12 to open their season.For the A team, McPherson was led by Kamryn Prescott with a nine-point, five-steal and two-rebound performance.

Muehler tops class 4A at state XC

WAMEGO, Kansas – For the first time since 2009, a state cross country champion has been born from the McPherson High School cross country ranks as sophomore Caleb Muehler’s first-place finish in the boys’ division paved the way for the Bullpups Saturday, October 28 in Wamego.The last time a McPherson cross country athlete was crowned state champion came in 2009 when Adam Porter claimed the 5A title.

History repeated: Bullpups best Buhler for state berth

BUHLER, Kansas – Most people would say that lightning never strikes twice, but the McPherson High School boys soccer team would say otherwise as the Bullpups punched yet another ticket to the state semifinals by knocking off rival Buhler 1-0 in the quarterfinals Tuesday evening for the second straight season.Halloween was not the only thing spooky about Tuesday evening as McPherson’s postseason magic has been eerily parallel to last season.
