Eighth grade Pups close careers with league title
A two-year run ended with just one loss and two league championships, as the eighth grade McPherson Middle School girls basketball team finished off their season with a 14-1 record and a Patriot League North Division Tournament title.After going undefeated in 2022 in their seventh-grade year to grab the Pioneer League championship title, the eighth grade Lady Pups accomplished a similar feat in 2023 by losing just one game and grabbing back-to-back league titles, except this time McPherson were the conquerors of the Patriot League.McPherson’s lone loss in their two years at the middle school level, in which they combined for a 26-1 record over a two-year stretch, was to Wellington on Thursday, November 9 as they fell 25-22 to the Crusaders in their fifth game of the season.However, the Lady Pups rattled off 10 straight wins to end their middle school basketball careers, including a 48-24 victory over Haysville West in the league semifinals and a 29-9 win over Prairie Hills in the league finals.“These girls finished their middle school careers as Pioneer League champions (seventh grade) and this season (eighth grade) were the Patriot League champions (regular season) on top of the Patriot League North Division Tournament champions,” McPherson Middle School eighth grade head girls basketball coach Matt Sandbo said about his team’s magical two-year stretch.
Bullpup wrestling caps year with strong finish
ABILENE, Kansas – One final bout in 2023 for the McPherson High School boys and girls wrestling teams took place on Thursday, December 14 and Saturday, December 16, as each team turned in impressive performances heading into the new year.McPherson Boys:The Bullpup boys began their final time on the mats at 10:00 A.M.

Bullpup swimmers take fourth entering new year
HEIGHTS, Kansas – In the final meet of the year, the McPherson High School boys swimming team took home three first-place event finishes and placed fourth as a team in the annual Wichita Heights Christmas Relays meet on Thursday, December 14.Before entering one of the most traditional holiday seasons, McPherson competed in its most non-traditional swim meets at the annual Wichita Heights Christmas Relays, which features four swimmers per event as all events were in the form of relays with no individual events.“This is a non-traditional format, where all events are comprised of teams with four swimmers,” McPherson head boys swimming coach Matt Cotton said about the different format.
