Commissioners discuss spending

There was some contention as to where the money should be spent during the Sales Tax Report section of Tuesday’s City Commission meeting.Interim City Administrator Daniela Rivas presented commissioners with the final sales tax report for the quarter and asked them to transfer $1.8 million into the Fire Station #2 fund.

YMCA receives award

The McPherson Family YMCA was honored at the Safe Kids Kansas Annual Meeting with an Outstanding Partnership for Child Safety award.The award was presented on December 5 by Safe Kids Kansas in recognition of the McPherson Family YMCA’s commitment to reducing accidental injuries to children.In the spring of 2023, the McPherson Family YMCA established a Life Jacket Loaner Station within the YMCA facility.

McPherson County students receive scholarships

Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus is continuing a one-of-a-kind scholarship program that allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree while working part-time and gaining valuable on-the-job experience with Salina manufacturing company Great Plains Manufacturing.Eight students from K-State Salina — all working toward one of the campus’s engineering technology degrees — have been announced as the Great Plains Scholars Program recipients for this year.

Revolution Church Hosts Chamber Ribbon Cutting

Revolution Free Methodist Church staff, congregants, and community members gathered December 5th to celebrate the church’s expanded space with a Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting.“Faith is a strong pillar of our community in McPherson so thank you for everything you are doing to continue to enrich our community with that,” said Chamber president-elect Carlyn Lemon as she invited Revolution Church’s lead pastor, Steve Gray, to the podium and presented him with a certificate of appreciation.Gray shared that the church launched just before Covid shut everything down in 2020, bringing their attendance down from 150 their first Sunday to nothing within three weeks.

Late run helps Lady Cats edge Inman

MOUNDRIDGE, Kansas – Following their first loss of the season, the Moundridge girls basketball team took home a thrilling 57-49 win over league rival Inman as the Lady Wildcats used a late 12-3 run to pull away for the victory.A dominant performance in game one of the season saw Moundridge start off with a 55-17 win over Elyria Christian.

Area roundup: County schools compete in busy week of tournaments

In an extremely busy week of basketball before the upcoming Christmas break, five of the six county area teams were involved in either the Goessel Bluebird Classic or and Moundridge Early Season Tournament while Smoky Valley had a pair of games for themselves.Canton/Galva, Elyria Christian and Little River all participated in the Goessel Bluebird Classic with the Canton/Galva boys and Little River girls each finishing 3-0 for the week.At the Moundridge Early Season Tournament, the Moundridge boys won easily, going 3-0.In wrestling, the Smoky Valley boys and girls both scored decisive team wins at Hesston on Saturday, including six individual champions.For the final full week of games before the Christmas break the area schools look like this – the boys are Moundridge at 4-0, both Canton/Galva and Elyria Christian are 3-1, Inman and Little River are 2-2 and Smoky Valley is still looking for that first win.As for the girls teams, Little River is ranked number one in Class 1A Division I and is unbeaten at 4-0, Moundridge is 3-1, Smoky Valley is 2-1, Canton/Galva stands at 2-2, Inman is 1-2 and Elyria Christian is 0-4.Among the upcoming games this week is a huge matchup between Little River and Moundridge on Tuesday in basketball and Smoky Valley’s grapplers having matches in Abilene.Here is a brief on the happenings of the area teams as best we have of information received.SMOKY VALLEY VIKINGS:On Thursday, the Viking wrestlers traveled to Chapman for a straight dual with the Lady Vikings scoring a solid 36-18 win while the Viking boys lost on a penalty point deduction, 35-36.For the Lady Vikings, Taytum Reed at 125, Keira Mullen at 135, and Kasyn French at 140 all scored wins while Peyton Wesley, Kenzlie Crain and Gemma Carter all getting wins by forfeits.Earning wins all by a fall for the Viking boys were Connor Barnes at 132, Jakorian Crain at 144, Parker Gardner at 175 and Conner Smith-Bolin at 215.At the ten-team Hesston Invitational on Saturday, the Lady Vikings won the team championship with 125 points and five individual champions.

Wrestling gains momentum heading into new year

With one more outing each before the new year, the McPherson High School boys and girls wrestling teams have been making a splash on the mats as each team completed its respective tournament on Saturday, December 9McPherson Girls:After starting the season off with a 2-0 record in duals and having a strong showing in the annual Kretzer Classic on Saturday, December 2, the McPherson girls wrestling team followed that up by tying for 10th place out of 31 teams in the annual Christmas Clash wrestling tournament in Great Bend on Saturday, which featured five of the top 10 teams from classes 6A and 5A.McPherson had seven wrestlers place inside of the top 12 in their respective weight classes and had a first-place finisher in junior Ciara Rawson, who has now won the 235-pound weight class at the Christmas Clash in back-to-back years following her win by fall (1:34) over Emporia’s Alexa Castillo in the championship match.The next best finisher for the Bullpups was Hunter Wilson in the 155-pound weight class.
