Inman XC ready to make noise

INMAN, Kansas – Small but mighty is the Inman High School cross country team motto heading into the season as the Teutons’ limited roster holds plenty of promise with the 2024 season just around the corner.The five-man roster of Inman’s cross country teams includes both the girls and boys, but one state qualifier and two runners that are on the rise come from the small group.

Lady Pup golf sets sights on state in year three

After a team trip to state in year one and breaking records in year two, the third year of the McPherson High School girls golf program is primed for its best season yet as a plethora of top talent returns for another shot at the state tournament.Two years ago, nearly every player in the Lady Pups’ varsity lineup had never picked up a golf club before starting McPherson’s inaugural season.

Bullpup soccer ready to remake magic

Pure magic can be used to define the McPherson High School boys soccer team’s last two seasons following improbable postseason runs to the state semifinals, but the Bullpups will look to pull off another postseason heist in 2024 as numerous top players left the program.In 2022, McPherson shocked the soccer community by storming its way to a third-place finish at state despite entering the playoffs with a 5-11 record.

Kansas food experts outline problems of waste and access at inaugural summit

WICHITA — Food experts in Kansas say food waste is a growing problem in the state and solutions to food insecurity may lie within local connections.ICT Food Rescue executive director Stephanie Merritt, in a presentation Wednesday at the inaugural Kansas Local Food Summit in Wichita, said food waste and food insecurity are two concerns that go together.

Williams, Silsby to lead Canton-Galva XC

CANTON, Kansas – In 2023 the Canton/Galva cross country team closed out the season with just two runners, but coach Tina McMannis is excited to have a group of highly successful freshman runners joining the team from the junior ranks.2024 will be McMannis’ second season leading the cross-country team and will be assisted by Carman Abernathy.Only two Eagle runners ran at the Class 1A regionals in 2023, with freshman Honesty Williams setting a personal best run of 26:49.03 in finishing 35th in the girl’s competition and Ethan Brozek ran 17th in the boys run.Returning for her sophomore season, Williams will lead the Lady Eagles after placing eighth in the Wheat State League meet before setting her personal best mark at regionals.Coach McMannis is thrilled with the two incoming freshmen runners with Londyn Dietrich and Faith McMannis as both found a lot of success as eighth graders.Faith McMannis was the league champion in the two-mile cross country run where she set a new Lady Eagle junior high mark of 13:51.81, before setting another junior high record by winning the 3,200 meters at the league track/field meet in the spring.After having success running sprints and hurdles in track/field, Dietrich will be running cross country for the first time.On the boys’ side, Brozek has made the choice of not running cross country this fall, but the Eagles does return Garrett Silsby for his senior season.

Elyria spikers to lean on seniors

ELYRIA, Kansas – After a pair of winning seasons and a trip to the state tournament in 2023 for the Elyria Christian volleyball program, the 2024 season will begin with a new head coach as Tonya Robertson has replaced Jayme Gardner.Overall, Robertson has 10 years of volleyball coaching experience, including leading the Elyria Christian teams from 2012-2014.
