CANTON, Kansas – In 2023 the Canton/Galva cross country team closed out the season with just two runners, but coach Tina McMannis is excited to have a group of highly successful freshman runners joining the team from the junior ranks.2024 will be McMannis’ second season leading the cross-country team and will be assisted by Carman Abernathy.Only two Eagle runners ran at the Class 1A regionals in 2023, with freshman Honesty Williams setting a personal best run of 26:49.03 in finishing 35th in the girl’s competition and Ethan Brozek ran 17th in the boys run.Returning for her sophomore season, Williams will lead the Lady Eagles after placing eighth in the Wheat State League meet before setting her personal best mark at regionals.Coach McMannis is thrilled with the two incoming freshmen runners with Londyn Dietrich and Faith McMannis as both found a lot of success as eighth graders.Faith McMannis was the league champion in the two-mile cross country run where she set a new Lady Eagle junior high mark of 13:51.81, before setting another junior high record by winning the 3,200 meters at the league track/field meet in the spring.After having success running sprints and hurdles in track/field, Dietrich will be running cross country for the first time.On the boys’ side, Brozek has made the choice of not running cross country this fall, but the Eagles does return Garrett Silsby for his senior season.
